Alfama
Alfama, the oldest district of Lisbon, is all kinds of charming. Here, you can find ginjinha (sour cherry liqueur) sold in a local laundromat and fado wafting from restaurants as you wander the labyrinth of narrow streets. It's also home to Ulysses, a really special 3-seater speakeasy-style cocktail lounge that's one of my favorite bars in Lisbon!
Palacete Chafariz del Rei
When my mom came to visit, we chose Palacete Chafariz d'El Rei for luxurious staycation! I had been eyeing their epic brunch and afternoon tea for months, so actually staying at the neo-Moorish-style mansion was a dream come true!
On a sunny day, enjoy breakfast overlooking the Tagus River under a canopy of bougainvillea. Alternatively, you can choose to cozy up in the Tea House, with all the refinement and elegance of a noble house from the 18th century. The hotel's stunning stained glass windows, centuries-old tiles, and intricate detailing will leave you wanting to explore the palace all day!

Bairro Alto Hotel
Want to be close to the nightlife without having partiers on your doorstep? The Bairro Alto Hotel is a 5-star hotel on Luís de Camões square, with easy access to the nightlife of Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré, the shopping of Chiado, and the tourist attractions of Rossio. The vibe is old-world charm meets bohemia, and the Grand Hôtel de L'Europe is the perfect setting for it! Corpo Santo Hotel
If I were forced to choose one hotel in Lisbon, Corpo Santo Lisbon Historical Hotel would earn my vote— any not just because of their 24-hour emergency ice cream station. Relax in the downstairs sitting area where you'll find a preserved portion of the Fernandina Wall from 1373. While you're down there, check out the electronic display that gives you a visual depiction of the city's history. Speaking of relaxing, guests get free access to Corpo Santo's sauna, jacuzzi, Turkish bath, sensations shower, halo therapy, Scottish shower, and gym.
For the constantly-hungry travelers like me, you'll love the freshly-baked treat upon arrival, grab-as-you-need snacks like gummy bears, and dried fruit and nuts and bottled water before or after a day of touring and nightly Portuguese snack and cocktail hour— all included! At breakfast, be sure to ask about their drink of the day, and you may just find yourself enjoying a banana split latte!

If being central is your heart’s desire, this area will give you easy access to all of Lisbon and the train to Sintra. This area is mostly flat, so it’s the best area for people with mobility issues.
Hotel Avenida Palace
Hotel Avenida Palace offers top-notch service, an amazing breakfast, and a great bar! I stayed here for several days shortly after moving to Portugal, and the thoughtful staff left fun gifts for us every day! Even three years later, the Hotel Avenida Palace-branded folding fan is a staple in my purse on hot days in this city where air conditioning doesn't come standard. Don't worry, though! There IS air conditioning in the hotel!
The beds are comfy, and the rooms are silent, but don't sleep through breakfast! The dining area overlooks Praça dos Restauradores. Come hungry, because the buffet includes a selection of international and local dishes (including tiny pastéis de nata)!

Lapa + Estrela
I may be biased, because this is my neighborhood, but if you're looking for something a little outside the hustle and bustle, with great views and an easy walk to the river, you'll love Lapa and Estrela. Be sure to check out the Jardim da Estrela and the epic Basílica da Estrela across the street.
Olissippo Lapa Palace
Want to live your best princess (or prince) life? When you enter the stunning, pink (!!) Olissippo Lapa Palace , you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd been transported outside of Lisbon to a faraway palace. The quiet, sprawling estate is a perfect spot for rest and relaxation by the outdoor pool in the sub-tropical centennial garden. And when you're done in the sun, head inside to the Turkish bath, steam room, and indoor pool.
After all that relaxation, you may want to stay in for the evening, with drinks in the garden and white tablecloth service at Lapa Restaurant.
The rooms honor traditional Portuguese through the eras, with each decorated differently in Art deco, Colonial, Algarvian, or Neo-Classic styles. No stone is left unturned in sharing Portuguese culture with guests— all the porcelain is by the Portuguese brand, Vista Alegre, founded in 1824.

This is the neighborhood that made me fall in love with Portugal, and the area I call home. The Moorish Quarter is culturally diverse (hello, foodies!), the tile-spotting is 🔥, and hidden gems abound amidst winding, fado-filled streets.
Hotel Mundial
According to a friend who recently stayed, Hotel Mundial has clean rooms, stunning views, and an epic breakfast! I have a completely rational fear of revolving doors, which was confirmed when I got my heel stuck upon exit. My new shoe broke, and the front desk staff and maintenance team went to work finding super glue to fix my shoe. Portugal gets a bad rap for its very European (and rightfully so!) style of customer service. I was so pleasantly surprised that this team went above and beyond to fix a problem!
And their rooftop is worth a visit— even if you don’t stay!

Note: while Tram 28 starts just outside the hotel, do yourself a favor and skip the line (and potential run-ins with pickpockets), and book one of the tours below instead. The red tourist tram is never crowded (so you'll get a window seat and great pics!) and has an audio guide so you'll actually understand what you're seeing! And a private tuk tuk ride is a fun way to meet a local and see the city!
