10 Best Afternoon Teas in Lisbon
When I moved to Portugal in 2021, afternoon teas in Lisbon were few and far between. And I know what you may be thinking: But Brittany, afternoon tea is a British thing, not a Portuguese thing. And THAT is where you would be wrong(ish).
The reason the Brits like tea? Portugal!
It’s time for a history lesson. In 1662, the Portuguese princess, Catherine of Braganza, married England’s King Charles II. Since the Portuguese had direct trading routes with Asia, the nation had been importing tea leaves since the early 17th century, meaning that Princess Catherine grew up drinking tea.
When she moved to England to marry the king, she brought tea with her… and the rest, as they say, is history.
So, while towers of tea sandwiches aren’t Portuguese, per se, the ritual of drinking tea is perhaps even more Portuguese than it is British
So, if you're looking for the best afternoon teas in Lisbon, you've come to the right place!
